To All Fellow Community Members:

The purpose of this correspondence is to inform residents of our Lions Community and areas served by l’École Saint-Augustin, ( a much larger area) of the events that are happening that are causing great concern to the Cymbria Lions Club and will greatly affect the community which we have served for the last 34 years.

Since September 2000 we have rented space to the French Language School Board and Le Conseil acadien de Rustico. This we feel has been a good arrangement for all groups involved. The Cymbria Lions Club wants to continue with this type of arrangement. All parties are making very good use of our building. The School and Conseil use the building all day with little or no interference from any other group. The Lions, Lionettes, Sea Cadets, Allied Youth & other groups use some designated areas at predetermined times on evenings and weekends. A lounge operates on Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday afternoon and evening. All of these activities take place after regular school hours. We have even proposed to move the lounge so that the school would have additional space, but this was turned down.

Unfortunately, not all people think that this is a good arrangement. A group of people in the French School Community and Le Conseil acadien de Rustico, and French Board of Education have successfully lobbied our provincial government for a new school for 50 children. A new school which would also include a French Community Cultural Center. Do we need a new French School? Do we need or can our community support a new Community Cultural centre? A loss of rental income would greatly affect what services the Lions Club would be able to provide to our community. Where else would you see our Tax dollars work so well, providing a place for education in French & assisting the Lions to provide a Community Centre. This also enables all fund-raising efforts to be directed right back to the community & those that need our assistance.

The Cymbria Lions Club has expressed to the Board of Education, the French School Board, parents and government representatives that we want the l’École Saint-Augustin to continue functioning at its present location and that "this area does not need another community center". The Cymbria Lions Club, like all Lions Clubs do not generally become involved in political issues, however we now feel that the community needs to become informed and involved and we ask for your input. Government has set aside monies, and a Planning Committee for the New French School is being formed. The Government and French School Board are only hearing from a very vocal minority in support of this project and unless there is some opposition heard, from private individuals and local groups , this project will go ahead. If you need more information or have any questions, please leave a message at the Cymbria Lions Club @ 963-2166 or email us @ cymbrialions@pei.aibn.com.
